That might just be the best story I've heard all week.

I have to admit that one of the things that drew me to live here was the blatant assertiveness that permeates, such as that of an un-named young woman we both know who recently retalliated to an aggressive candy-seller who repeatedly interrupted our lunch at Wendy's with a "JESUS CHRIST, you were just here! WE DON'T WANT ANY CANDY." One of the more awesome moments of my life.

It's something I've tried to get my nebbishy semi-WASP ass to learn for years. I think I'm halfway there, as evidenced in a recent airport trip where I ran rampant over unsuspecting residents of the Bay Area with a barrage of eye-rolling and mini-lecutres on expediency.

This is why I drive. The public transportation system is such a locus of rage for me. And you're right, it's a point of pride as a New Yorker not to let people get away with rude crap. Which is why I answered the guy who elbowed me in the forehead on the 5 train as it pulled into Grand Central with a swift and unthinking punch to the neck as I exited the subway car (and walked, really quickly, to the farthest end of the platform, hoping that my cousin who was accompanying me could take care of herself by pretending I was a stranger to her).
