15 Simple Things That, If I Am Entirely Honest with Myself, I Am Simply Not Willing to Do to Save the Environment

  1. Unplug all of my appliances when I leave the house;
  2. Find a drugstore that sells those curly lightbulbs, and then spend the money on them;
  3. Turn the water off while I’m brushing my teeth;
  4. Buy canvas bags to take to the grocery store, and then use those bags when I go to the grocery store;
  5. Buy local, and/or go vegetarian (except by accident), and/or spend $2 more on the organic variety;
  6. Not leave the coffeepot and the laptop running all day long;
  7. Read any books that are primarily about green living, carbon footprints, and/or responsible consuming, or listen to people, whether they are on NPR, or not, yammer on and on endlessly about all the various things they are or are not buying and eating this week;
  8. Change my spending habits at all;
  9. Write a letter to any legislator;
  10. Unplug even one appliance when I leave the house;
  11. Wash my clothes in cold water, or line-dry them;
  12. Change any of my habits at all;
  13. Reuse anything at all that I would normally just throw out;
  14. Put any thought whatsoever into saving the environment; or
  15. Really, in all honesty, one single thing that I’m not already doing.

Six Things That I Am Willing to Do to Save the Environment:

  1. Not use the car, or the dishwasher that I already do not possess and can’t afford;
  2. Arbitrarily throw things away in multiple trashcans, and call it recycling;
  3. Watch An Inconvenient Truth (once);
  4. Not be in control of my own heat;
  5. Comply with any tax or regulation that I am powerless to avoid; and
  6. Lecture others.

  1. “Find a drugstore that sells those curly lightbulbs, and then spend the money on them;”

    I do use the curly lightbulbs, not because of my love of the environment, but because I am CHEAP and LAZY. The bulbs are very inexpensive at Ikea, and, since electricity is the only utility not already included in my rent, using the low energy bulbs feeds my inner skinflint. Furthermore, they last forever. I’ve been living in my apt. for a year now and have not yet had to change a light bulb. Anything that keeps me from having to hop up on a ladder is worth it.

  2. Joking aside, I know you are right – but like several things on this list, this is one of those that I always vaguely intend to do, but never remember that one time in a year when I actually go out and buy lightbulbs.

  3. I do one through six, and thirteen. I also ride my bike around town, like to whole foods where I use my canvas bags to buy organic, vegan food. You didn’t put biking on the list, but I wanted to make sure I got credit for it.

    boo. ya.

  4. I didn’t include bike riding, because, having lived for most of my adult life in two of the oh…two cities in the U.S. with reliable public transit, it’s not something I think about much. Generally, my carbon footprint is probably really tiny, just by virtue of living in a really urban area, but I can’t take credit for that.

    Ultimately, I’m kind of okay with the world ending.

  5. Is it just incredibly fucked up that the fact that the world won’t end at all, but will just go on as it always has, adapting and evolving, while our species disappears, leaving nary a trace, brings me comfort?

    That’s a rhetorical question.
